“LET’S MAKE MAGIC”
In April, local artist and educator Aaron Nigel Smith gave me the honor of illustrating the album cover for 1Tribe Collective’s All One Tribe. This project is one of my personal favorites as it holds a lot of meaning and is creating lasting impact to so many people. I am proud to announce that the album has received a Grammy nomination! Wish the team luck as they await the final decision.
THE INSPIRATION
For this project I worked with their team to create an illustrated album cover. Initially we partnered to gather inspiration and to develop a library of objects and shapes that all held deep rooted symbolism within West African cultures. Examples of this include the “chain link” or NKONSONKONSON which is reference to community and the unity within it. Also, “the heart” or AKOMA which is a symbol of patience and tolerance. Additionally I took inspiration from the fact this album was intended for youths, and to its goal of enlightening and educating them. I really wanted to make something that overall felt vibrant and playful.

The album features 25 tracks performed by 26 different Black artists. Each of the artists performs a song on the album, and the group collaborates on "One Tribe.
